L-carnitine

Carnitine is derived from amino acids and is found in almost every cell in our body. Refers to a number of substances which include L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine.

It plays a particularly important role in energy production due to its basic function which is the transfer of fatty acids from the cytoplasm to the mitochondria, so that energy production takes place. In addition, it transports the toxic compounds that form inside the mitochondria outside them, in order to prevent their accumulation.

Carnitine is considered a popular dietary supplement, which can be particularly beneficial in certain pathological conditions characterized by chronic inflammation.

The benefits of carnitine are divided into two categories: Benefits to the muscular system and health benefits.

Muscular system
-
Recovery
Seven studies from 2002 to 2010 show a tendency for 2g of carnitine to improve post-workout recovery through indicators such as 1) reduction in muscle injury, 2) reduction in lactic acid accumulation, 3) grip after training and 4) creatine kinase levels in the blood.

-Testosterone
One important study reports an increase in the number of androgen receptors with 2g of carnitine per day. This does not mean an increase in testosterone in the blood, but a better commitment (exploitation) of the existing one!

-Fat and muscle mass
One study reported that 1g of ALCAR helped reduce adiponectin, a hormone produced in adipose tissue that is primarily involved in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid metabolism. Small-scale fat loss was shown in three additional studies in middle-aged but non-athletic individuals. These findings are in addition to those that refer to increased capacity for anaerobic exercise, increased lean muscle tissue and improved blood flow. The picture we have of carnitine, then, is that it can theoretically help further fat loss, and that this theory has to some extent been experimentally confirmed.

Health Benefits
-
Sperm quality
Both 2g and 3g, over a wide range of ages, have been shown to improve sperm quality and volume, especially in men with initially reduced sperm quality. These results were in a specific study, comparable to medication for a similar condition.

-Walking
2g of carnitine has been shown to significantly relieve the symptoms of intermittent claudication (pain in the buttocks, thighs, calves or soles that occurs only when walking and goes away when we rest).

-Spiritual performance
100mg / kg body weight in one case, and 20-50mg / kg in the second case appeared to treat to some extent the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in young children. In the first study, a parallel reduction in aggression was observed, as well as an improvement in their attention. Considering the positive effects of carnitine on memory and mental fatigue, we can draw a conclusion about an overall improvement in mental function.

-Heart and circulatory
2-3g of carnitine seems to lower blood glucose levels, while doses of up to one gram seem to increase insulin sensitivity, a valuable weapon for patients with type II diabetes. In addition, both during exercise and in periods of deglycogenesis (a condition in which the athlete through appropriate dietary choices "empties" his muscles of glycogen to look more lined), 2-3g of carnitine appear to drop heart rate and blood pressure.
