Bacteria are single-celled organisms (rarely multicellular) that can only be seen under a microscope, but are usually larger than viruses. They are found in any environment, from the ice of the polar regions to the deserts of the tropics and from the tops of the highest mountains to the depths of the oceans. They are found on the bodies of animals and plants as well as on the ground.
Bacteria usually appear as short sticks (bacilli) or as round cells (granules), are self-sufficient and multiply by division. They often require special treatment.
The name bacteria, comes from the ancient Greek word "βακτηρία" (meaning rod, or stick), due to the shape of the first of these microorganisms that were observed under the microscope. However, bacteria can take many forms, such as:
When infectious bacteria enter the body, they increase in number and most likely produce powerful chemicals, toxins, that destroy specific cells in the invading tissues and make us sick.
Some of the most well-known diseases caused by bacteria are staphylococcus, escherichia (the most important species are the well-known coliforms), streptococcus, chlamydia, hemophilia, gonococcus and rickettsiae.
Not all bacteria are harmful. Some that we find in our body, such as in the mouth and intestinal tract, are beneficial, for example bacteria called probiotics which seem to reduce infections. Other examples of non-pathogenic bacteria are those that cause the fermentation of bread and the fermentation (boiling) of must etc.
